A few days ago, Phil Helmuth won his historic 15th World Series of Poker gold bracelet. A few days after that, we aired our recent interview with Phil for the When to Jump podcast, where Phil talks about making bets in more than just cards. In a conversation from his living room, Phil takes what he learns from poker and applies it to how anyone can jump. “You are always in the right place at the right time”, Phil says on the episode. And it turns out, he’s right. Phil is all about a growth mentality, which research has recently shown is more important than knowing exactly what your “passion” is. “Showing up is half the battle”, says Phil. “Think that you can do great things, and you will do great things.” Shout outs to….
Alex in South Carolina who wanted to ask our community this: “I graduated college in 2016 and I am currently at my first job post-college. I dread every day going into work, and realize this isn’t they type of engineering work I want to do. I know I want to leave my current job, and have a vision of what I would like to‘jump’ to next. But I can never seem to land interviews. What would the “Whento Jump” community recommend for landing that interview? And during the interview, what to discuss when I don’t always have the qualifications?” Tell us your thoughts so we can pass it on to Alex. Our two cents: if you know what you’re aiming for, and know exactly what you’re missing, solve for those exact qualifications—either at work or on your own time outside of work. Continue to refine, develop, and advance your skillset so that you can check a box that otherwise could keep you out of consideration. And don’t forget to keep crushing your day job—those bosses and colleagues will be the folks who vouch for you in whatever you do next—now and in the future.
